Key Chapters of Our Lives

Pretend for a moment your life is a book comprised of various chapters. We don’t know how the book ends or how many chapters remain, but we can peek back at a those already composed and perhaps learn a little something worth considering in the process…

Let’s begin by looking back, opening our book to a chapter that, good or bad, shifted our life’s trajectory or mindset. Got it? Good. As you consider the narrative, what do you find yourself doing with this chapter? Plenty of options:

  •         Constantly re-reading it?
  •         Acting as if it never happened?
  •         Placing it in context of entire book?
  •         Referencing it for lessons learned going forward?

Then, as you close the book on this particular chapter and take a moment to reflect, what feelings emerge? Anger about the unfairness of what happened? Disappointment with where it led in later chapters? Gratefulness for what you learned through that period? Our response likely indicates something about where we sit today and how we’ve addressed (or not addressed) the elements of that chapter.

That’s likely plenty to chew on for this week, but just for grins, let’s toss out one more to consider: What is the title of the chapter of your life story you’re currently writing? Why is this such an important question? Because it reminds us that we have the opportunity to write it – and as we clarify the title of the chapter, the vision for the contents often write themselves (in a good way). Hint: the more we focus on the “who” we are becoming rather than the “what” we are pursuing, the clearer our vision and the resultant path forward.

Let’s get writing, Catalyst Community!
